10 Steps to Implementing an Aspirational Healthcare Benefit

Step 1. Decide Your Goals - What do you, as the customer, want? Why do you offer health benefits?

· Attract and Retain Top Talent

· Healthy Productive Workforce

· Employee Satisfaction

· Reduced Costs

Step 2. Implement a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Plan to ensure you get what you want.

· Decide on the monitors you will use to evaluate if you are getting what you want

· Decide how those monitors will be operationalized

Step 3. Align and incent your internal staff to achieve your goals monitored by your CQI Plan

The people inside your company responsible for health benefits should be aligned to help you  reach your health benefit goals.

Step 4. Align and incent your benefit consultant to achieve your goals monitored by your CQI Plan

Your health benefits consultant should be aligned to help you  reach your health benefit goals.

Step 5. Survey your workforce to get a baseline and identify those members holding the most trust

Understand your current level of member satisfaction and identify those within your organization that people trust most to look out for their best interests.

Step 6. Decide how much will be invested in each of the 4 defined contribution strategy buckets

Medical Plan – How much will be offered, and which options will be offered to handle major medical expenses.

· Medical Partner – How much will be offered, and which subscription-based primary care options will be offered to align the front door of healthcare to work for your members.

· Coach Partner – How much will be offered as a monthly incentive to encourage members to take ownership in their health and work with a coach to support them in reaching their goals.

· Medical Savings - How much?

Step 7. Educate and engage a small group of members who your workforce trusts

Introduce this customer focused strategy, to create a far better approach to healthcare, to those members you identified in Step 5. Gather their input to improve the strategy.

Step 8. Hold orientation meetings where those trusted most can introduce this new approach.

Introduce members to their benefits partner. The benefits partner educates members and offers to meet one-on-one with each member to educate and answer questions, which will build relationships. These meetings can be held in-person or virtually.

Step 9. Benefits partner introduces each member to their other two health partners

Benefit partner encourages each member to set up an initial visit with both their medical partner and coach partner.

Step 10. Members and their families enjoy a trusting relationship with their health partners.

Members know how to reach their partners for any health need, and they can access the entire healthcare system through their personal health partners team.
